WHAT IS AT STAKE
This election is the most pivotal one in many years. If we Democrats do not win, it will be the downfall of the America we love.
I will sponsor job fairs, bringing together employers, both large and small, and persons seeking employment. I will also sponsor clinics of government public services. This will give citizens and small businesses one-stop access to services such as social security, grants, and government contracts. I will provide tax incentives for employers providing full-time employment. I support public works projects such as infrastrucure repairs and upgrades (examples: mass transit, roads and bridges, water supplies, electric grid modernization).
I support unions and collective bargaining. Union initiatives gave America’s middle class the 40 hour work week, child labor laws, workplace safety, vacations, sick leave, and insurance benefits.
Education of our children is our nation’s most important investment. In the global economy, America cannot afford to fall behind other countries in areas such as literacy and science education. No Child Left Behind needs be reformed to focus on learning instead of test scores. Education officials need to work more closely with families to ensure children are doing their best. Lottery profits should be fenced off for the exclusive use of education.
We also need a major program to retrain the unemployed for today’s job market.
We should leave Afghanistan now. Our brave troops have met every demand we have placed on them. We should bring our troops home now. America has devoted to Afghanistan staggering amounts of blood and treasure in our country’s longest war. Our money and our young people’s lives should be invested in helping America instead of helping Afghanistan.
I refuse to throw in the towel and abandon Social Security. The government should preserve Social Security, not privatize it. Social Security has served our aging population well for generations, and it has been critical in protecting our seniors from the ravages of the latest economic downturn.
Privatizing Social Security would risk our seniors’ financial security based on the gyrations of the stock market. While the stock traders would generate billions in profits for themselves as they trade and swap and gamble the seniors’ retirement funds, our parents and grandparents would lose their essential safety net.
I am open to all plans for modernizing Social Security to keep it solvent for the future. I think the salary limit for contributions should be removed, and the retirement age determination formula should be made more flexible.
I reject all Republican arguments that we must throw up our hands and give up on providing medical security to our seniors. Politicians should keep their hands off of Medicare. I support healthcare reform, and am open to all plans to make care of seniors more efficient and effective. However, I reject any plan to abandon Medicare and replace it with discount coupons.
